A Hope Chest of Light Keeping

A man

Get you a man who says “yes” when you decide to go to Ikea last minute.

Or Target.

Or Mom’s house.

Get you man who says “yes” when you ask for his help to hang up twinkle lights instead of curtains.

or artwork.

Or your coat.

Get you a man who says “yes” when you ask him to make you eggs.

or baked potatoes.

Or another cup of tea.

Get you a man who says “yes” when you ask if you look alright in this.

if you should wear the outrageous coat.

if you are ok to just wear tennis shoes.

Get you a man who says “yes” when you ask for his forgiveness.

or his compassion.

or his strength.

Get you a man who says “yes” when you ask him to carry this.

or lock that.

or fold the blanket over the couch just so.

Get you a man who says “no” when you ask if he’s ever going to leave.

or if you are not enough.

or if you are unworthy.

And then get a basketball hoop so you can play H-O-R-S-E in the kitchen.

You could do it yourself. Of course you could. And that would be fine, it would be fine to be just you making the tea and folding the blankets and hanging the lights. You’ve done it before. It was fine, it was nice sometimes. And sometimes not. But you could do it, it’s true. You could if you wanted to.

But if he’s great why not ask him? Let him help you make life sparkle.
